The Spa at Turf Valley's Do-It-Yourself Coconut-Lime Body Scrub

During the month of June, The Spa at Turf Valley is featuring the Coconut-Lime Body Scrub as the spa therapy of the month. If you enjoyed the body scrub, or are just a coco-nut, try making your own scrub at home with the recipe by Turf Valley Spa Director Krystal Kroll!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest from one lime

Optional

  • Lime and/or coconut flavoring oils
  • Shredded Coconut

Directions

  1. Place coconut oil in a bowl. Depending on the temperature of your surroundings, you may need to heat it in the microwave to soften it.
  2. Next, add some granulated sugar. Sugar is a great, gentle exfoliator.
  3. Zest a lime in the bowl. The natural oils in citrus are found in their peels.
  4. Finally, stir it all up!

If you prefer to have more of a coconut smell and feel to it, add coconut essential oils or shredded coconut.

Put the scrub in a cute jar and you can store it at room temperature for weeks. When you are ready scoop a palm-full out and massage all over your skin. Rinse with warm water. Massage any leftover oil into your skin, as the sugar exfoliates and the coconut oil is extremly moisturizing for the skin!

Checking-In with Pretty in Pink's Veteran Model Deneitra

Our 7th Annual Pretty in Pink Ladies Luncheon was held at Turf Valley last Friday, April 17th, and it was a hit! While we featured 33 cancer survivors as our models, we missed one of our favorite models and a staple at every year’s fashion show, Deneitra Hutchinson.

deneitra

Deneitra was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, and sought support at the Claudia Mayer / Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center, a place of hope, help and support for men, women and children living with cancer, at Howard County General Hospital. On one of her visits to the Cancer Center, she was asked to represent the center as a model at the Pretty in Pink Fashion Show. Deneitra modeled in her first Pretty in Pink Fashion Show in 2011, and has been a familiar face on stage every year.

“My favorite part of Pretty in Pink is the sisterhood and camaraderie I feel every year. Seeing the women, even the vendors, Octavia, Symmetry Hair Salon, and Simply Divine Boutique, they always have a smile, a friendly face, and they’re encouraging – such a beautiful thing.”

This year Deneitra was unable to attend after being diagnosed with non Hodgkins-Lymphoma in November of last year. While her presence was missed, we have checked in to see how she is doing and am happy to report she has finished treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center!

Deneitra has found an outlet from treatment in blogging, and has maintained blogs during both bouts of cancer. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer she began a blog called “Losing a Life-Long Friend”, as a way to say “good-bye” after her double mastectomy.

In May of 2014 she began a new blog called 50.2.fifty, signifying her 50-day countdown until her 50th birthday. When she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in November, she began to blog about her treatment, though taking a different approach, utilizing video to show the journey.

“I felt like it was better – I could connect better if people could see me and hear my voice. They could look and see that I was doing well. Video offered a vulnerability and honest look.”

Now that Deneitra has finished chemotherapy, we wish her a smooth recovery and we look forward to her participating in Pretty in Pink next year! If you’re interested in following her blog, visit: 50.2.Fifty.

Deneitra is an Army wife and mother to three boys – 17, 15, and 11. Deneitra and her family reside in Columbia, MD. Many in Howard County probably recognize her as a co-host of Columbia Association’s Columbia Matters, a Telly award-winning monthly television program that takes viewers on a journey through Columbia and Howard County, Maryland, and provides entertaining and resourceful information about local events and programs.
